Abstract: Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a notorious agricultural pest of fruit and vegetable industry. Sterile insect technique is widely used in control of B. dorsalis, but sterile males may be injured during radiation. In this study, the influence of cultivable gut microbes on biology and morphology of B. dorsalis was investigated through adding two antibiotics to the larval diet. The pupal weight, survival rate and mating competition of the antibiotics- treated sterile males were significantly lower than the control sterile males. Further, although the survival curves of the antibiotics-treated and control sterile males fitted with pattern I of the basic Weibull distribution model, longevity of the antibiotics-treated sterile males was significantly shorter than that of the control. This result suggest that gut microbes can be used to reduce the irradiation-induced damage to Bactrocera dorsalis.
