Abstract: Effects of host size on the oviposition decision of Sclerodermus alternatusi, an ectoparasitoid of Monochamus alternatus, were determined to support artificial rearing of the parasitoid and its use in biological control. Parasitoids were artificially reared on Thyestilla gebleri larvae of different size (0.10-0.15 g, 0.15-0.20 g, 0.20-0.25 g, 0.25-0.30 g, 0.30-0.35 g) under laboratory conditions. The parasitism and oviposition behaviors were observed and the progeny number and sex ratio were recorded. The results showed that host size did not affect the parasitism rate of S. alternatusi, while did affect the progeny fitness. Progeny number was positively related with host size and the male proportion of progeny declined with the increase of host size. These findings reveal that host size does not affect the oviposition decision of S. alternatusi, but influence the progeny fitness.

Key words: Sclerodermus alternatusi, host size, parasitism rate, development duration, number of progeny, male proportion
