Abstract: Predation of lychee stink bugs, Tessaratoma papillosa Drury, by Arma chinensis (Fallou) was evaluated with respect to functional responses the fourth instar nymphs, fifth instar nymphs, the female and male adults of A. chinensis to the first instar nymphs of T. papillosa. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the functional responses of A. chinensis to T. papillosa fitted well with type II. The maximum daily predation by the fourth instar nymph, the fifth instar nymph, female, and male of A. chinensis was 9.0, 8.2, 8.4 and 5.9, respectively; the corresponding attacking efficiency was 0.9562, 1.327, 1.100, and 1.244, respectively; and handling time was 0.105 d, 0.162 d, 0.132 d and 0.149 d, respectively. The search rate of A. chinensis on the first instar nymph of T. papillosa decreased with the increase in prey density. The predatory behaviors of A. chinensis, including searching, following, attacking, feeding, and movement were similar in predating nymphs of T. papillosa to other preys, such as armyworm. The results show that A. chinensis can achieve high control potential on the first instar nymph of T. papillosa and can serve as an effective bio-control agent against T. papillosa.
