Abstract: The growth and development characteristics of Neoseiulus barkeri feeding on Aphelenchoides besseyi and its predatory capacity to A. besseyi were studied. The results showed that N. barkeri could develop normally and complete its life cycle by feeding on A. besseyi. There was no significant difference in each developmental duration of N. barkeri between feeding on A. besseyi and Tyrophagus putrescentiae. However, the net reproductive rate (R0=31.4605), the intrinsic increase rate (rm=0.2313/d) and the finite increase rate (λ=1.2603) of N. barkeri feeding on A. besseyi were higher than those feeding on T. putrescentiae (R0=26.8800; rm=0.1973/d; λ=1.2181), respectively, and the population doubling time (Dt=2.9962 d) was lower than that of feeding on T. putrescentis (Dt=3.5126 d). Therefore, the life activities of N. barkeri feeding on A. besseyi was better than those feeding on T. putrescentiae. The predatory functional response of N. barkeri to A. besseyi was in accordance with Holling II equation and the formula was Na=0.5645N0/(1+0.002484N0). The predatory capacity (a/Th) of N. barkeri to A. besseyi was 128.30, and the maximum theoretical predation amount in a day was 227.27 nematodes. The optimal temperature for N. barkeri to prey on A. besseyi was 25℃. Under this temperature condition, the female mite starved for 4 d had the largest predation on the nematode. The results showed that N. barkeri had a strong predation effect and could be used as a potential natural enemy of A. besseyi.
