Abstract: Ethanol extracts of 40 medicinal herbs were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against Ralstonia solanacearum and the active ingredients of extract exhibiting optimal antibacterial effect was analyzed. The results indicated that ethanol extracts of 32 (80%) species showed various antibacterial activities. The inhibition rate of extract of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) was the most pronounced with the inhibition zone diameter of 19.53 mm. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed a total of 12 chemical constituents in the extract of clove. The major constituent eugenol with the relative content of 40.43% exhibited the highest antibacterial activity with the inhibition zone diameter of 18.50 mm and the EC50 value of 0.0292 mg/mL at 6 h after treatment. Our study suggests that plant species with antibacterial activities in Laoshan mountain have a big variety and the active ingredient eugenol of clove extract could be a potential biocontrol agent to control tobacco bacterial wilt.
