The Occurrence Period and Effect of Intraspecific Cannibalism Behavior of Arma chinensis under Starvation

Abstract: In order to clarify the occurrence period and intraspecific cannibalism behavior of A. chinensis under starvation and guide the large-scale breeding and release of A.chinensis, we investigated the intraspecific cannibalism behavior in different developmental stages and densities. The results showed that predation behavior of A.chinensis to eggs mainly occurred within 24 hours after starvation. The intraspecific cannibalism behavior of female to eggs was significantly stronger than that of male. The predation proportion of female was 2.80-3.25 times that of male, and the predation amount was 18.75-21.20 times that of male. The emergence rate of eggs who were fed by female was 70.66%, which was significantly lower than that of male (86.59%) and CK (87.88%). The developmental stages and feeding densities significantly affected the intraspecific cannibalism behavior of A.chinensis, which was mainly occurred at 19.63 h and 36.00 h after starvation, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instar nymphs did not show intraspecific cannibalism behavior, which would emerge after 4th instar. The intraspecific cannibalism behavior would not emerge at low density, but high density would strengthen this behavior and which would increased significantly with the increase of density.
