SEM Observation of Antennal Sensilla of Chrysopa pallens Rambur (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae)

Abstract: To provide background information for ongoing research on host location mechanisms, we examined the external morphology of antennal sensilla of the green lacewing Chrysopa pallens (Rambur) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) using scanning electron microscopy. Antennae of female and male C. pallens are linear in shape and (1.52±0.08) and (1.58±0.23) cm in length, respectively. The scape and pedicel are each composed of one segment, while the flagellum consists of 116 sub-segments, on which most sensilla are distributed. The flagellums of female and male antennae are (1.44±0.04) and (1.47±0.13) cm in length, respectively. Nine morphological sensilla types were recorded in both sexes, including four types of the highly abundant and widely distributed sensilla trichodea (STⅠ, STⅡ, STⅢ and STⅣ), three types of sensilla basiconica (SBⅠ, SBⅡ, and SBⅢ), and one of each type of sensilla chaetica and böhm bristles. Although the shape, structure, numbers, and distribution of antennae of females and males are basically similar, major differences were recorded between the sexes in the length of some sensilla types. Both the STⅢ and SBⅠ are significantly longer in female than in male. Notably, SBⅡ was found only in female. Detailed examination of sensilla morphological features of different sensilla types were discussed in relation to the possible roles in prey location behavior of C. pallens.
