Abstract: An optimized artificial diet for rearing the pink stem borer, Sesamia inferens, was developed by adding corn ear and rice stem powders, and changing the proportions of other components of our previous semisynthetic diet. S. inferens population could complete the whole life history on this optimized artificial diet. Simultaneously, it displayed faster larval developmental rate, higher larval survival rate and higher adult fecundity on the optimized artificial diet, compared that on the natural host plant, water bamboo. So the rearing efficacy of S. inferens on the optimized artifical diet was significantly superior to that on its natural host, water bamboo. Therefore, this artifical diet is suitable for mass rearing of S. inferens population.

Key words: Sesamia inferens, artificial diet, water bamboo, rearing efficacy
