Abstract: The effects of biological control of insect pests are usually evaluated using the same methods as those for chemical control. However, the methods focus mainly on the short-term lethal efficacy on the target pests, while neglect the long-term and sustainable control effects along with the increase of natural enemy populations is neglected, and the benefits of biological control in protecting environment and biodiversity either. At present, there is a lack of widely accepted method for evaluating the success of biological pest control programs. In this article, the methods for evaluating biological control of insect pests are summarized, and their practical feasibility and advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. Based on these analyses, an index system for evaluation of biological control was established through the analytic hierarchy process. The index system was comparatively applied in some cases of insect pest control, the methodology and criteria were proposed for evaluating the success of biological control programs.

Key words: biological control of pests, effect evaluation, integrated evaluation, analytic hierarchy process
