Abstract: The predation capacity of Arma chinensis on Mythimna separate (Walker) was determined by measuring the predation of the 3rdand 5th instar nymphs and the female adults of A. chinensis starved for 24 hours on the 3rd and 5thM. separata instars at different densities. The results showed that the 3rd and 5th instar nymphs and female adults of the predator exhibited Holling II functional responses. The attacking efficiency of the predators to the 3rd instar M. separate larvae ranked from high to low was the 3rd instar nymphs (0.621), female adults (0.576), and the 5th instar nymphs (0.568); the female adults had the highest control efficiency (14.40). The attacking efficiency of A. chinensis to the 5th instar M. separate larvae ranked from high to low was female adults (0.778), the 5th instar nymphs (0.475), and the 3rdinstar nymphs (0.365); the female adults had the highest control efficiency (7.14). With the increase of prey density, predators’ searching efficiency decreased gradually, and the searching efficiency of females was obviously higher than those of the other stages. The results show that A. chinensis has great control ability to M. separate, especially the female adults.
