Abstract: To determine the predation capacity of the natural enemies, Sycanus croceouittatus Dohrn, on the larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), the predatory behavior and the functional response of 4th and 5th instar nymphs of S. croceouittatus to the 3rd instar larvae of S. frugiperda were investigated in the laboratory under the conditions of (25±1)℃, RH (65±5)% and a photoperiod of 16L:8D. When the S. croceouittatus preyed on the S. frugiperda, it used the stylet to puncture into the prey body to paralyze the prey, and then sucked the prey until it was empty and dry. However, sometimes the predator transferred to attack another prey before a complete sucking. The predatory functional response of 4th and 5th instar nymphs S. croceouittatus fitted well with Holling II, with attacking efficiency of 1.159 and 2.913, handling time of 0.297 d and 0.261 d, and the maximum daily predation number of 3.906 and 3.831, respectively. These results show that S. croceouittatus has potential for the control of S. frugiperda.
