Abstract: To clarify the costs and benefits of maternal care in parasitoid Sclerodermus guani Xiao et Wu (Hymenoptera:Bethylidae), we investigated the effects of maternal care of S. guani on the fecundity of mother and the development fitness of offspring. The results showed that the lifetime of maternal care wasps was 26.64 d, not different from that of the wasps without maternal care (28.85 d). The number of maternal care wasps'offspring was lower than that of the wasps without maternal care. Furthermore, with maternal care, the development of offspring was improved, the death proportion, cocoon proportion and the weight of maternal care wasps'offspring were 9.29%, 61.52% and 0.64 mg, respectively, which were better than unmaternal care group's (22.04%, 27.40% and 0.55 mg). Additionally, with maternal care, female proportion of offspring, emergence ratio of coccon pupae and uncoccon pupae were 90.77%, 99.57% and 79.57%, respectively, which had no significant difference from those of the wasps without maternal care (87.96%, 97.74% and 84.45%, respectively). But, the emergence ratio of coccon pupae was over 13% higher than uncoccon pupae's.
