Abstract: Entomopathogenic fungi in the genus Metarhizium are very common and useful for biological control. The classification system of Metarhizium was made great progress so far. However, the new system has no systematic application in China. This paper systematically studied the species diversity of 21 Metarhizium strains isolated from insects in Dabie Mountains in Anhui Province in recent twenty years was investigated. Morphological characters of Metarhizium, like colonial morphology and the growth rate, conidiogenous structures, spore morphology and spore size were calculated. The transcription elongation factor (EF-1a) was amplified and sequenced. We analysed the homology and constructed the phylogenetic tree of EF-1a by Maximum Parsimony method with MEGA.The result showed that this 21 Metarhizium strains in new system were falling in five branches. They are belong to five species respectively, M. guizhouense, M. majus, M. acridum, M. flavoviride var. pemphigi, and a new record species, M. brunneum. And the morphological of new record species was described. The study clarified the Metarhizium species diversity in Dabie Mountains and provided a scientific method for identification and more strains for biocontrol.

Key words: Metarhizium, EF-1a amplication, new record species
