Abstract: Hippodamia variegata (Goeze), one of the most important predatory natural enemies against aphids and many other pests, is characterized by early occurrence, huge population size, polyphagy and voracity. A comprehensive understanding of the biological and ecological characteristics of H. variegata is an important prerequisite for scientific utilization of its biological control potential. This paper summarizes the research progresses of H. variegata, mainly focusing on the ontogeny, bio-ecological characteristics, and predation capability, as well as conservation measures and their release application. This information may provide useful knowledge for conservation and application of H. variegata in the biological control.
