Abstract: To evaluate the control efficacy of Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) and Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) adults against Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), the functional responses of H. variegata and H. axyridis to S. frugiperda 1st and 2nd instar larvae were studied in laboratory. The results show that the maximum daily predation number, sequence of attacking efficiency, and handling time of H. variegata adults were 210.4, 1.279 and 0.005 d, respectively, against S. frugiperda 1st instars and 62.2, 1.167 and 0.016 d, respectively, against S. frugiperda 2nd instars. The values of H. axyridis adults were 249.0, 1.854 and 0.004 d, respectively, against S. frugiperda 1st instars and 68.3, 1.281 and 0.015 d, respectively, against S. frugiperda 2nd instars. H. variegata and H. axyridis adult reduced their search behavior with the increase of prey density. The results show that H. variegata and H. axyridis adult are efficient in control of S. frugiperda and can be used in the field.
