Field Evaluation of a Plant-Based Female Attractant for Codling Moth(Cydia pomonella)

Abstract: To address the limitations of severe environmental pollution from conventional pesticide-based control and of male-trapping only of sex pheromone traps, this study developed a female-specific attractant for codling moth(Cydia pomonella) based on plant volatiles. Individual compounds and their blends were tested in field conditions to identify effective attractants. The results showed that single compounds had poor trapping efficacy, whereas blended formulations significantly improved attraction. Key active compounds included methyl salicylate, pear ester, ethyl(E,Z)-2,4-decadienoate), geranyl acetate, nonanal,(Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, and butyl hexanoate. Field trials demonstrated that the optimized blend(methyl salicylate:pear ester:geranyl acetate:nonanal:(Z)-3-hexenyl acetate:butyl hexanoate=5:4:4:4:6:6) captured 9.55 adults per trap during 3 days, while a further optimized female-specific blend(3:4:4:4:6:6) attracted6.91 females per trap during 3 days.
