Abstract: Large scale and low cost reproduction of natural enemies is the prerequisite and guarantee for biological control of pest insects. Effects of low temperature treatment of the substituted host, pupae of Tenebrio molitor, on the reproduction of parasitoid Sclerodermus guani were determined by exposing T. molitor to-6,-3, 0, 3, or 6℃ for 24 h. Results showed that low temperature treatment of T. molitor pupae could increase the reproduction of S. guani. However, the mortality of host pupae reached 40.00% at-6℃, which is not beneficial for the efficient utilization of host resources. In the treatment of-3℃, the host mortality, parasitism rate and survival rate of S. guani were 16.67%, 86.67% and 100.00% respectively, and duration of paralyzing time, duration of pre-oviposition and amount of adult offspring were 9.6 h, 4.67 d and 29.30, respectively. Low temperature treatment of pupae of T. molitor can increase larval survival of parasitoid and-3℃ is the most suitable treatment temperature; with no obvious negative effects on egg hatching or cocoon survival.
