Abstract: Coccinella septempunctata were reared on non-insect ingredients artificial diet and the difference of predatory capacity of C. septempunctata to Aphis craccivora was investigated between the diet-fed and aphid-fed beetles in the laboratory. The results showed a positive relationship between the preyed amount and prey density. The predatory functional response of C. septempunctata fitted well with Holling's equation Ⅱ. The maximal theoretical predation capacities of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th instars, female and male adult of C. septempunctata reared on diet were 20.9, 36.0, 100.2, 403.2, 490.9, and 395.3 per day, respectively; those for the C. septempunctata reared on aphids were 20.0, 28.9, 102.1, 476.2, 472.2, and 396.4 per day, respectively. The results indicated no significant difference in the predatory capability between the diet-fed and aphid-fed beetles, suggesting that it is feasible to rear C. septempunctata using the diet.
