Effects of Beauveria bassiana-Corn Endophytic Symbionts on Feeding Behavior of the Asian Corn Borer Ostrinia furnacalis

Abstract: The effects of Beauveria bassiana-maize symbionts on feeding behaviors and feeding preference of the Asian corn borer (ACB) were investigated with a dish leaf-disc method in the laboratory using neonate and 3rd instar larvae of ACB. Our results showed that, in a 48-hour no-choice experiment, feeding on leaves with B. bassiana-maize symbionts (the treatment) by ACB neonates was significantly less than that on leaves without B. bassiana (the control), and the percentages of larvae feeding on the treatment and the control were significantly different, being 35.7% and 62.5%, respectively. However, the percentages of 3rd instars feeding on the stem showed no difference between the treatment and the control. In a 48-hour choice experiment, feeding on leaves by ACB neonates was significantly less in the treatment than in the control, the percentages of neonates feeding on the treatment leaves decreased with extension of time, which were significantly different at the time point of 48 hour between the treatment and the control (6.3% and 20.6%, respectively). The percentages of 3rd instars feeding on the stem of both the treatment and the control increased with extension of time, being significantly higher in the control than in the treatment. At the time point of 48 hour, the percentages in the treatment and the control were 33.1% and 45.6%, respectively. Our results indicate that, there is an obvious inhibition and avoidance effect of B. bassiana-maize symbionts on the feeding ACB.
