Abstract: The potential of Propylea japonica to control the larvae of Dasineura pyri was determined by measuring the predatory capacity and preference of P.japonica for the larvae of D.pyri under indoor conditions. The results showed that the predation by P.japonica all instars to D.pyri fitted well with the Holling-II model, the maximum daily theoretical predatory capacities of the 1st to 4th larvae and adults of P.japonica on the larvae of D.pyri were 9.58,17.42,44.96,51.71,and 100.56 aphids, respectively.Under different prey density settings, the predatory capacity of P.japonica all instars to the prey increased with increasing prey densities, while the searching efficiency decreased with the increase of prey densities. The average daily predation by P.japonica adults decreased with increasing self-density under the same prey density. P.japonica preferred Schizaphis piricola when both D.pyri and S.piricola were provided. A comprehensive comparison between larvae and adults of P.japonica shows that adult P.japonica can play a better control of the larvae of D.pyri, which serves as a theoretical basis for the field application of P.japonica for control of D.pyri.
