Abstract: The functional responses of Harmonia axyridis to Contarinia pyrivora, i.e., searching effects, intraspecific interference and the ability to select different prey, were studied to determine the potential controlling capacity of H. axyridis against C. pyrivora. The predacious efficiency of both adults and larvae of H. axyridis against C. pyrivora fit well with the Holling Ⅱ model. The adult H. axyridis consumed 75.19 C. pyrivor per day at the most. Larvae and adults of H. axyridis showed low searching efficiency with the increase of prey density. When the quantity of prey was fixed, daily predation of C. pyrivora decreased with the increase of H. axyridis. H. axyridis preferred C. pyrivora when both C. pyrivora and Psylla chinensis were available, with a Cain index D above 1. The above results indicated that H. axyridis is a potential natural enemy for C. pyrivora.
