Abstract: For the development of new botanical aphicides, the joint aphidicidal action of farnesol and nicotine against Aphis citricolavander Goot was evaluated using bioassay by topical application and field trial according to the China national standard. The mixture of farnesol and nicotine showed significant synergy effect against A. citricolavander, with a co-toxicity coefficient (CTC) of 151.63 at the optimal ratio of farnesol to nicotine (4.82:1, w/w). Based on the result of solvents and surfactants screening, a 6% farnesol·nicotine soluble concentrate (6% F·N SL) was developed, which consisted of 5% farnesol, 1% nicotine, 10% surfactants, and 84% solvents, with quality measuring up with the National SL Quality Standard. Field trials showed a 87.80% control efficiency by 126.0 g a.i./hm2 of 6% F·N SL against the mixed populations of Sitobion avenae Fabricius and Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) at 7 d post spraying, and an above 81% control efficiency by 115.5 g a.i./hm2 of 6% F·N SL against Aphis citricolavander Goot at 7 d post spraying. Thus, the mixture of farnesol and nicotine has a significant synergy effect against aphids and is of potential to be further developed as a botanical pesticide.
