Abstract: Food attractant for Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) can achieve a significant control efficacy on field pest population due to its attractiveness to both female and male adults. Chlorantraniliprole is used at 0.5 μL/mL in combination with food attractant for controlling H. armigera. In this paper, the effects of attractant added with low dose of chlorantraniliprole on fecundity and egg hatching rate of H. armigera were measured, and the field control efficacy was evaluated. In laboratory, attractant with chlorantraniliprole exhibited high levels of toxicity to females, with mortalities of 75.8%, 67.0% and 60.2% at concentrations of 0.25, 0.125 and 0.0625 μL/mL, respectively. The reproduction coefficient was significantly reduced by 91.4% and 85.1% in the females exposed to the attractant with chlorantraniliprole at 0.25 and 0.125μL/mL, respectively, than in the control females. In field cage trials, egg and larva density in peanut was decreased by 73.6% and 75.6%, respectively, when females alone or both sexes were exposed to the attractant with chlorantraniliprole at 0.25 μL/mL. Therefore, lower dose of chlorantraniliprole combined with food attractant could provide significant control of H. armigera adults and their offspring populations. The results also provide scientific basis for reducing chlorantraniliprole dose in the application of H. armigera food attractants.
