Identification of an Isolate of Ostrinia furnacalis Nucleopolyhedrovirus and Its Bioactivity against Spodoptera frugiperda Larvae

Abstract: In this study, we conducted molecular identification, morphological characterisation and bioactivity of a new nucleopolyhedrovirus with wide host range isolated from Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée) in Enshi, Hubei Province. The results indicated that the newly isolated nucleopolyhedrovirus was homologous to Rachiplusia ou nucleopolyhedrovirus and Anagrapha falcifera nucleopolyhedrovirus, while Kimura 2-parameter distances did not support it was the same species as these two viruses. The median lethal concentration of Ostrinia furnacalis nucleopolyhedrovirus was 3.86 times of that of Mamestra brassicae nucleopolyhedrovirus. These results will lead to the development of efficacious virus-based bioinsecticides against Spodoptera frugiperda.
