Evaluation of Telenomus remus Quality using Light and Host Egg Preference

Abstract: To improve the quality of mass-reared Telenomus remus, the study evaluated the body size and parasitic ability of T. remus at different dispersal distance from the light source, the eggs of host Spodoptera litura and the combination of light and host eggs under the optimal attraction source. Results indicated that the combination of 100 lx compound light with S. litura eggs exhibited the highest attraction of 91.60% and 83.33% of females and males of T. remus, respectively. Additionally, body size of T. remus adults differed between dispersal distances. The overall body sizes of T. remus females and males with a dispersal distance of 100 cm were significantly larger than those with a dispersal distance of 50 cm, 30 cm and 0 cm, while showed no difference from those with a dispersal distance of 80 cm. The parasitism rates to S. litura eggs and offspring emergence rate of T. remus with a dispersal distance of 80 cm and 100 cm were all above 86.00% and 65.00%, which were significantly higher than those of females with a shorter dispersal distance. The hind tibia and parasitic ability of the offspring adults with a dispersal distance of 80 cm and 100 cm were also higher than the adults with the other three dispersal distances. A comprehensive comparison reveals that the combination of 100 lx compound light with S. litura eggs, along with a dispersal distance of 80 cm, can effectively screen out large quantity and high quality T. remus. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for improving the quality and efficiency of mass-rearing T. remus.
