Abstract: It is an important research direction in biocontrol of plant diseases to induce disease resistance of plant by avirulent or attenuated strains. In previous study, we identified an avirulent Magnaporthe oryzae strain AM16 which was avirulent to all tested rice varieties. In this study, AM16 strain was cultured with pathogenic rice blast strain, and it had no antagonistic effect on the growth of pathogenic strain. When rice leaves were sprayed with AM16 culture medium, the medium enhanced the blast resistance of rice plants at seedling stage, and the resistance was maintained stably 48-72 h after spraying AM16 culture medium within 5 days of shake flask culture. Greenhouse and field experiments showed that spraying AM16 culture solution enhanced the blast resistance of rice plants at tillering stage and heading stage, and the control efficacy was more than 40%. The activity of defense-related enzymes (PPO, PAL, SOD, POD, APX and CAT), the expression level of key genes in SA- and JA- signaling pathways (OsPAL1, OsNPR1 and OsAOS2), and defense-related genes (OsChit1, OsPR10b, OsPR1a and OsPR1b) were up-regulated in rice plants treated with AM16 culture solution. This study laid an important foundation for further development and utilization of AM16 strains in biological control of rice blast.
